South Carolina Infrastructure Expansions Bring Increased Import Opportunities

SC Air and Port Expansions Update Aug 2022 Header Image

South Carolina has seen impressive expansion of trade distribution systems lately. The South Carolina Ports Authority is working hard to rapidly expand the capacity of Inland Port Greer and additional cranes were recently added to Port of Charleston, which will provide capability to load/unload three “14,000-TEU vessels simultaneously,” part of a larger $500 million project to improve the Wando Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant.

While ports are a key component of moving cargo efficiently on and offshore, planes are also crucial for supply chain distribution, keeping products flowing smoothly throughout the US.  With consumer demand at an all time high, our own Greenville-Spartanburg Airport is making sure its cargo operations are top notch to meet the influx.

Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (GSA) is 21st in our nation in the amount of cargo that passes through its facility – domestic and international. To keep up with an almost 50% increase in cargo, the airport recently finished a new 50,000 square foot facility for greater processing and handling power. This is in addition to the existing 111,000 square foot cargo facility built just a few years ago in 2019. The cargo operations amass over 17 acres in a prime Upstate location and allow manufacturers and businesses to take advantage of air, nearby interstates, and local rail ports which are all located within a few miles of the airport, improving distribution times.

The Upstate has continued to see expansive growth in distribution systems and volume of tonnage that passes through our area annually. When the 110,000 square foot facility was built in 2019, it more than tripled existing capacity.  Now a few years later, the additional 50,000 square foot facility will provide the extra relief needed to handle ever increasing demand. We at Global Trade Logistics Group closely monitor trade demand changes as well as distribution system expansions to be at the forefront of responding to evolving distribution needs. Our facility, located closely to GSA and Inland Port of Greer, continues to modernize and improve efficiencies to provide top quality services for our clients; and with the newly expanded operations at GSA and Inland Port of Greer, our clients are successfully situated to leverage these expansions to broaden their own capacity, delivering more goods to consumers.
